An itchy scalp can be caused by any number of maladies. Lawrence E. Gibson, M.D. from the Mayo Clinic claims that seborrheic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis of the scalp can create a scaly, itchy condition, and it needs to be diagnosed by a doctor. Other conditions that can cause an itchy scalp include a yeast infection, head lice, improper hair care and allergies. If the condition persists, consult your doctor.

Avoid Allergens

Find out if you have any allergies that may cause an itchy scalp. This could include something you're eating or hair products with elements that irritate your skin. After you learn of skin sensitivities or allergies, read labels before purchasing a new hair product. If your itchy scalp is keeping you awake, you may try an antihistamine, advises dermatologist Robert Richards, M.D. in Toronto on MotherNature.com.

Anti-Itch Product

The Mayo Clinic recommends buying an over-the-counter cream or lotion that is specifically formulated for skin irritation and itching. Most of these products can be applied to the head. When applying it, make sure you put it directly on the scalp and not just on the hair. Medicated shampoos with salicylic acid or ketoconazole tar may help decrease the itching. Ointments containing vitamin D or corticosteroids can also provide relief.

Oil

The Mayo Clinic website recommends using some sort of oil such as mineral oil applied to the scalp at night. After application, cover your head with a shower cap. This may help loosen scaly skin, decrease inflammation and reduce some of the itching. Other oils recommended by Ygo Home Remedies include olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil.

Clean Hair

According to HealthHype.com, hair that isn't washed often enough can cause an itchy scalp. Skin cells can build up on your scalp, creating dandruff and itchiness. Wash your hair more frequently if this is the case. Select a pH balanced shampoo advises Dallas based Ron Renee, the president of Aestheticians International, on MotherNature.com. Look for one with a pH level around 4.5 to 5.5.

Lemon Juice

The Ygo Home Remedies website claims that lemon juice helps condition your scalp, remove dandruff and decrease itching. For a lemon juice scalp conditioner, massage the juice of a fresh lemon into your scalp, leave it on for approximately 15 minutes and wash with your regular shampoo.

Apple Cider Vinegar or Baking Soda

Apple cider vinegar and baking soda are both cleansers that you probably have in your kitchen. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with four parts water. Massage this mixture into your scalp and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash and rinse well. For the baking soda remedy, mix baking soda with water to create a paste. Rub it on your scalp and leave it on for approximately 10 minutes before shampooing your hair.
