The colon is the large intestine, and it is very easy to tell if it is functioning well. If you are not able to have a daily bowel movement, it may be a good idea to do a colon cleanse. For example, some people report having only two bowel movements a week. Consider how much food you eat on a daily basis, and it quickly becomes clear why having a daily bowel movement is a good idea. Check with your physician or other medical professional if a colon cleanse is appropriate for you.
Psyllium Seed Husks
Carrie L’Esperance, author of the New Seasonal Detox Diet, details several different ways to cleanse the colon, including consuming psyllium seed husks. These are available at health food store and online. For example, taking a tablespoon of psyllium seed husks with a glass of apple juice can help reestablish regularity. The husks absorb liquid many times their weight, helping to move waste through the colon.
The Master Cleanse
The Master Cleanse is a fasting lemonade credited to author Stanley Burroughs, who published a nutritional booklet about it. The master cleanse consists of drinking only a lemonade made from water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. It is meant to provide enough calories to fast for several days until the tongue no longer has the appearance of white coating; this is supposed to be a sign that the stomach and colon have been cleansed, according to Burroughs.
Juicing
Elson Haas, M.D., author of The New Detox Diet, has encouraged people to juice fast to cleanse the colon if it is appropriate for their health status. He has organized many juicing groups through his medical practice in Marin County, California.
Dr. Haas states in his book that juicing organic vegetables and fruits is key, as these will not have pesticides that would be counterproductive to a colon cleanse.
