Baldness, also known as alopecia, is a condition in which the scalp either loses the hair it grew previously or fails to grow new hair. Prior to the invention of modern medicine, remedies based on locally available plants were the solution to all medical problems, including baldness. Although past cultures usually used whatever was available to them, today many people have access to folk remedies for baldness from around the world.
Rosemary
Rosemary is frequently cited in herbal texts as a baldness treatment because of its ability to cleanse the scalp and stimulate the root of the hair, according to Hair Loss Advisor. To use rosemary, boil the fresh or dried leaves in several cups of water. You may add sage, peach leaf, nettle or burdock if you prefer. Steep the rosemary and other optional herbs for fifteen to twenty minutes, then strain out the plant parts and allow the water to cool. Use the rinse once a week for best results. Also, several shampoos are available that contain rosemary essential oil.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek is a spice often found in curry. It is also used as an herb to stimulate the glands of the scalp, as well as to stimulate women's mammary glands during breastfeeding. According to Natural Home Remedies, you can use fenugreek to treat baldness. Grind approximately one ounce of fenugreek seeds and use water to mix into a fine paste. Apply this paste to your head, let it sit for an hour, then rinse. Apply once a day for at least one month.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is another common folk remedy for baldness, according to Hair Loss Advisor. It is believed that apple cider vinegar normalizes the scalp's oil level and pH as well as exfoliating the scalp to clean hair follicles. You can apply apple cider vinegar in one of two ways. The first method is to part the hair in half-inch sections and use cotton balls to apply apple cider vinegar directly to the scalp. The other is to rinse the hair using a mixture of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water. In either case, leave at least fifteen minutes but no more than three hours between application and shampooing. The acidity of apple cider vinegar also conditions the hair.
Saw Palmetto
Most commonly known for its use in treating prostate enlargement and maintaining prostate health in men, saw palmetto can also be used as a folk remedy for baldness, according to GrannyMed. Use saw palmetto to treat baldness either by taking it internally as a supplement or by purchasing a shampoo that contains saw palmetto and applying it to the hair. Both products are available in many health food stores. Since saw palmetto can interfere with iron absorption in the body, do not take a saw palmetto supplement if you are anemic or you are taking prescription blood thinners, unless your doctor specifically clears you to do so.
