Exfoliating your skin is necessary in order to get rid of dead, rough skin cells. Regular exfoliation will also help stimulate new collagen and your skin will appear fresher and smoother. There are a variety of products and methods used for exfoliation. How you choose to exfoliate will depend on your skin's condition and your age, as well as your budget. If you have sensitive skin, you should consult your dermatologist before starting an exfoliation routine.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation technique that can be done at home using over-the-counter products. It can also be done in your dermatologist's office for longer-lasting and more professional-grade results. According to the Cleveland Clinic, at-home microdermabrasion kits only polish away dead skin cells to reveal a cleaner, shinier complexion. On the other hand, professional microdermabrasion sessions help remove your outer layer of skin for a deeper exfoliation. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the physician uses a small, vacuum-like device to blast tiny crystals across your skin. The device then suctions the crystals back in, along with your dead skin. You may need several sessions to achieve desired results.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that is effective when used for exfoliation. There are several ways to use salicylic acid. You can receive professional chemical peels using the acid at your dermatologist or you can purchase products containing salicylic acid that are gentle enough for everyday use; for example, many face and acne creams contain salicylic acid. According to Revolution Health, salicylic acid "exfoliates skin and can improve the texture and color of the skin. It penetrates oil-laden hair follicle openings and, as a result, also helps with acne."

Exfoliating Gloves

While microdermabrasion and salicylic acid focus on the face, exfoliating gloves are effective at exfoliating the rest of your body. They can be purchased inexpensively at any department or beauty store and are machine-washable for continuous use, making the gloves an economical investment. According to Monster Guide, you should use the exfoliating gloves to brush off your body's dry skin even before you shower. In the shower, you can apply your body wash or soap directly into the gloves and scrub your body using gentle, circular movements. Monster Guide recommends using the gloves every other day and using a washcloth with an exfoliating cleanser for a milder exfoliation in between. Finally, make sure to apply lotion after drying off. Because exfoliation can lead to dry skin, it's important to stay moisturized.
