How to Get Rid of Puffy Swollen Eyes

Swollen and puffy eyes are a common condition caused by factors such as hormone changes, stresses, not enough sleep, crying, and fluid retention. It can also be caused by insect bites, hangovers due to excessive alcohol or passed on by heredity. It is mostly thought of as a cosmetic problem, but can also be a serious health risk depending on the severity of the condition.

Symptoms commonly-associated with this condition include itchy, irritated eyes, redness, swelling around the eyelids, dark circles and difficulty opening and closing the eyelids. A plethora of home remedies can help you alleviate the problem.

Step 1

Wrap an ice cube in a piece of paper towel and hold for a few minutes on each eyelid.

Step 2

Keep eye and facial creams stored in your refrigerator--the coldness of the creams helps reduce puffiness.

Step 3

Apply hemorrhoid cream on the skin under eyelids. The anti-inflammatory agents contained in the cream can help reduce puffiness.

Step 4

Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. Dehydration causes eye puffiness because the body stores water as a defense mechanism.

Step 5

Slice or grate a raw potato and place it under the eye or slice a cucumber and do the same.

Step 6

Steep two tea bags and lie down, placing them on closed eyelids for 15 to 20 minutes. Chamomile tea, Indian tea or red raspberry leaf tea are great for soothing puffy, tired eyes.

Step 7

Use an eye pack to help reduce swelling and puffiness of the eyes.

Step 8

Wear sunglasses in the sun. Sunglasses help protect the eyes by acting as a barrier between your eyes and the elements. Wearing glasses prevents debris from getting into the eye also.

Tips and Warnings

  • Preventing puffy and swollen eyes can be as simple as getting enough sleep every night. Avoid rubbing the eyes too frequently. Avoiding artificial sweeteners and too much sodium is also advisable as these cause fluid retention.
  • If puffy and swollen eyes persist, or if vision becomes impaired in any way be sure to seek medical attention immediately as this may be a sign of a more serious condition.
