Football is one of the most popular sports throughout the United States. While it can be difficult to find competitive teams out of season, it is possible to play street football year round. Street football is what many refer to as the true essence of the sport, with kids playing against friends purely for the love of the game. Being a good street football player can be fun, or the start of a promising career.

Pick Even Teams

Street football is played for enjoyment, and to enjoy a game it should be competitive. Stacking the talent so your team wins heavily will only lead to the opposition losing its motivation, and the game losing its spark. Ways to even out teams include having two captains pick teams, alternating picks in a draft style selection. If a street football game gets uneven, have the leading touchdown scorer switch teams to even things up.

Assign Positions

Street football teams play best when each player knows their role. Assign blockers, wide receivers, running backs and a quarterback. If many people wish to play the same position then rotate every drive. For example, if four different players want to play quarterback, switch the quarterback each possession and rotate each football player through the positions.

Use Your Strengths

Recognize the strengths of your team and play to them. If you have a strong-armed quarterback and fast wide receivers, use the vertical passing game. If you have a talented running back and good blockers, grind out your yards on the ground.

Establish Tackling Rules

You should know clearly beforehand what constitutes a tackle during a street football game. Whether it's one-handed touch or two-handed touch, you should establish the rules and stick to them. If no referee is at the game, it is important that football players follow an honor code and be honest about whether they were touched. If players fail to do this, the game can quickly descend into a farce. It is rare that full contact tackling would ever be used in a street football game.

Set Time Limits

Designate a timekeeper and decided how long the street football game should last. An example of a street football game duration, is two halves lasting 10 minutes each. The clock stops with an incomplete pass, out of bounds, injury or change of possession. If no timekeeper is available, you can play an un-timed game, with the first team to reach 30 points being declared the winner.

Set Scoring Rules

A touchdown will be awarded six points, with a conversion being given after the score. A touchdown scored again from two yards out will gain an extra two pints for a street football team. If a target is available to kick through, players might have the opportunity to kick a one-point conversion. This would also allow a team to kick field goals. A typical street football field goal cannot be blocked, and counts as one point.
