Ayurveda is an ancient Hindu practice of alternative medicine that historically precedes Western medicine. Drawn from Vedic literature, Ayurveda is a holistic philosophy of healing that emphasizes integration of body, mind and spirit. Diet, exercise and herbal remedies are stressed. The Ayurvedic medical system asserts that acne is caused by irritation of the "Pitta dosha." According to Ayushveda.com, “dosha” means body. Pitta dosha infers “consumption of bitter, sour, spicy, or salty” foods, “anger, sun bathing, and indulgence in sexual activity,” are factors that irritate the Pitta dosha. This discussion of Ayurvedic treatment for acne is not an endorsement of use. Please discuss all alternative medical therapies with your doctor.
Cumin
Cumin is a major ingredient in curry. The seeds are native to Egypt, and cumin has been used as a spice and medicine for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, cumin was used in the process of mummification. It is available as whole seeds or as a ground powder. Cumin contains iron and manganese. In Ayurvedic medicine, tea made from cumin, fennel and coriander is used for the treatment of acne. This tea can be purchased from a store that sells Ayurvedic herbs and spices or you can make your own.
The Balanced Approach, an organization that specializes in Ayurvedic and medical nutrition provides a recipe for coriander, fennel and cumin tea. Crush the following ingredients, but do not crush to powder: 1 heaping tsp. coriander seeds; 1 heaping tsp. fennel seeds; and ½ tsp. cumin seeds. Put seeds and water into a tea pot (or tea ball) and bring to boil. Steep for 10 minutes. Cool and add a drop of maple syrup if you desire. Drink after breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Fennel
Greek mythology associates fennel with Dionysis. The Greeks also believed a fennel stalk was used to transfer knowledge from Mount Olympus to men. Fennel contains phytonutrients, vitamin C, fiber, folate, niacin and potassium which are important for cardiovascular and immune health.
Turmeric
Ayurveda also uses a tumeric facial mask for the treatment of acne. The mask is prepared as follows: Take 2 tbsp. curd, 1/4 tsp. turmeric powder and 1/2 teaspoon sandalwood powder. Mix until a uniform paste is formed. Pat paste gently on clean face and neck. Avoid the eye area. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Wash off with warm water and a soft wash cloth. Afterwards apply cold water. Gently pat skin dry with a clean towel. Apply moisturizer. Be aware that tumeric-sandalwood cream can stain skin yellow. It may take up to two weeks for the yellow stain to wear off your skin. It is not known if curd will eliminate this effect. As always, consult your doctor before using this or any other alternative medical therapy.
