Applying pressure points to the body is an art form practiced in Asia for centuries, according to the Stanford University School of Medicine. The theory is that exciting pressure points allow the body’s natural healing abilities deal with minor ailments and pain. Working with pressure points may take some practice. Once you learn the technique, you may find the right pressure points helps you relax and reduces pain.

Step 1

Locate the point you wish to utilize. Some examples include behind the knee or above the ankle on the back of the leg. The exact location will depend on why you are applying pressure and the effect you wish to generate.

Step 2

Place fingertips on the pressure point at a 90-degree angle from the body. Press down with fingers. Acupressure.com states that the amount of pressure applied will depend on the muscles in the region. Fit, firm muscles will require more pressure. The middle finger works best for applying pressure.

Step 3

Sustain pressure on the point for three minutes. The pressure should be steady and penetrating. The pain should be mild, not extreme. If possible, lean your body into the pressure by shifting weight forward. This allows for a steadier pressure.

Tips and Warnings

  • Acupressure.com suggests repeating the pressure point therapy daily.
  • Do not sustain pressure for longer than 10 minutes. Pressure point stimulation should not replace medical care. Do not rely on acupressure or pressure points to heal a serious illness.
