If your hair feels dry and frizzy to the touch, your hair may be damaged. If you frequently color, perm, blow dry or straighten your hair, your hair may become dry and straw-like. Blow drying, curling or straightening hair frequently on a high setting may cause heat damage, giving hair a fried or burned appearance. You can treat damaged hair at home, using home remedies. Consult a doctor before using home remedies on the hair, particularly if you have allergies or health problems.

Step 1

Moisturize the hair with a mayonnaise mask, suggests David Daines, owner of David Daines Salon in New York City. Apply mayonnaise to dry hair, and leave it in for at least five minutes. Rinse the mayonnaise out in the shower and shampoo as usual. Repeat about once a week.

Step 2

Mix up an avocado mask to hydrate damaged hair, recommends Kori Ellis on beauty website, SheKnows.com. Mash a banana, an egg and half an avocado in a bowl with a fork, then add 2 tbsp. honey, 2 tbsp. buttermilk and 3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil. Apply to dry hair and work it through the roots, all the way to the ends. Leave the mixture on for 30 minutes, then rinse it off in the shower. Shampoo and condition as you normally would.

Step 3

Wear a hat when you go out in the sun or the wind, suggests Michael Ramsey, M.D., clinical instructor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Hair can become more damaged when it is exposed to the sun or whipped around by the wind.

Step 4

Prepare an egg white mask for frizzy hair, suggests Ellis. Beat an egg white with a fork until it froths, then add 1/4 cup plain yogurt and 1/4 cup mayonnaise. Apply the mixture to wet hair, then place a shower cap over the head. Leave the mixture on for 30 minutes, then rinse off in the shower. Shampoo and condition hair as usual.

Step 5

Snip off frayed ends very six weeks. Use sharp hair shears to cut about 1/4 inch off of your damaged hair, says Thomas Goodman, Jr., M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences

in Memphis. Removing damaged hair ends will help hair become healthier as it grows in.
