Rock climbing on any surface or in any style is only as safe as your rope and harness. Gravity exerts a great deal of force as you climb, and a harness that does not fit properly can be dangerous. A rock climbing harness should be fit for comfort, as well as the shape of your body and your climbing style. There are essentially three types of rock climbing harness: seat, chest and full body, according to LookingGlassOutfitters.com. Fitting a harness only takes a few steps.

Step 1

Pull on the rock climbing harness you have decided to purchase. Wear the same type of clothing you will wear when you are climbing so you know how it will fit when it matters most.

Step 2

Pull the harness down on your hips to see if it slides off. It should not come off no matter how hard you pull. The harness should rest above your hip bones but not restrict your breathing in any way.

Step 3

Check the leg loops of the harness to ensure they are snug but comfortable on your legs. If you have chosen a style that is adjustable, the webbing straps should be able to double back through the buckles with 2 inches to spare.

Step 4

Read the manufacturer's instructions thoroughly to learn how to buckle your harness properly. Most buckles must be fastened in a precise way to work properly, according to REI.com.
