Dark spots on your skin can make you uncomfortable in social situations and complicate your use of cosmetics. The American Academy of Dermatology, AAD, in a 2010 report to physicians, notes that the fault lies with the sun. After many years, especially if your lifestyle or occupation frequently take you outdoors, your suntan may become uneven or spotty. The spots are often called age spots or liver spots. Fortunately, they can be prevented and removed easily and safely.
Cure by Prevention
Start sun protection as early as possible. Writing in the 2007 Cleveland Clinic report "Disease Management Project," Dr. James Taylor says sun exposure sufficient to eventually produce dark spots is also a risk factor for skin cancer.
The Office of Radiation Protection, a branch of the Washington State Department of Health, identifies solar ultraviolet or UV rays as the cause of damage to DNA in human skin. Dr. Taylor offers a simple tip: Use a sun blocker with a sun protective factor or SPF of at least 15 from birth to age 18. This simple tip, begun at the earliest possible age, is a "cure by prevention" for dark spots. This will also decrease skin cancer incidence in the general population by almost 80 percent.
However, if you already have spots you want to remove, don't sabotage your treatment with direct sun light. Use sunblock creams during and after treating those embarrassing dark spots.
Before attempting to lighten or remove dark skin spots by any method talk your doctor. Some dark spots are cancer and should be inspected by a trained clinician. Improper or delayed care can be dangerous.
Tips From Your Kitchen
Your own refrigerator and pantry contain many foods with chemical compounds said to remove dark skin spots, according to a 2007 report prepared by a consortium of professional creative thinkers at YgoY. Their list of tips includes buttermilk, applied to your skin spots twice daily, crediting its lactic acid as a skin cleanser, depigmenting agent and beauty aid.
Another tip advises a mixture of 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar and 1 tsp orange juice dabbed on dark spots twice a day for one to two months
Chick peas, mashed and moistened with enough water to make a paste is also said to remove dark spots. The paste is applied twice daily and left in place long enough to dry. It is used every day until the desired degree of lightening is seen.
Tips From Your Garden
Skin care specialists writing for HomeRemediesWeb offer two tips from your garden to remove dark skin spots. Try the first method by finely chopping or blending fresh, raw onion so you can squeeze out some onion juice. Mix this with an equal volume of apple cider vinegar. Dab the mixture on your dark spots keeping it moist for at least 30 minutes before rinsing. Do this twice a day for at least six weeks. Continue until you remove the spots.
The second tip uses the sap or gel-like juice of a cut aloe leaf. Apply it to your dark spots for 45 minutes twice a day. Lightening should be visible within one month. Continue longer, if needed, for complete removal.
