Home exercise equipment can provide an effective cardiovascular workout without the expense of a monthly gym membership. Machines such as treadmills, elliptical trainers or stationary bikes allow you to maintain your fitness level in the comfort and convenience of home. With prices ranging from several hundred to several thousand dollars, most exercise equipment represents a major investment. Make the most of your investment by finding a fitness machine that fits your home, workout goals and budget.
Step 1
Measure the floor space in your home in the room where you'll use your new equipment. Check the ceiling height to see how much vertical space you have to work with. Keep these numbers in mind when choosing your new equipment, so you're sure to find a device that fits your space.
Step 2
Visit a sporting goods store or fitness supply center. Try different types of exercise equipment to find ones you like. Keep an open mind and try some machines other than the treadmill, elliptical and stationary bike. Consider stair climbers, rowers, ski machines and hybrid devices that may help you maintain your motivation to exercise.
Step 3
Test each machine for fit and comfort. See if treadmill belts are long enough to accommodate your natural running or walking stride. Try elliptical machines to determine if the stride feels natural and the pedals are properly spaced. Check the reach or bikes and other machines to see if you can maintain good posture during use. Look for seats and back rests that are comfortably padded. Adjust pedals and foot rests so your knees don't hit the handlebars or framing. Don't buy a piece of equipment that doesn't fit your body--even if it's the latest or most desirable equipment out there--as you'll be less likely to use it.
Step 4
Check prices to find machines within your budget. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, treadmills cost between $400 and $1,500, while stationary bikes range between $100 and $1,200. Stair climbers start at $200 and top out around $700, while cross-country ski machines start at around $300. (All prices as of 2010.)
Step 5
Ask your sales associate about the warranty. Choose exercise equipment with solid warranties (preferably at least two years) on both parts and labor. Skip the extended warranties, as they offer little real protection.
Tips and Warnings
- Ask your doctor or the trainers at your gym for recommendations on which equipment to buy. Your doctor can help you find machines you can use safely, particularly if you have any injuries. Fitness professionals can recommend the right machines based on your workout goals and current physical condition. Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise regimen.
