Oily hair does not typically signify a medical condition. Oil glands are found in the hair follicles on the scalp. When these glands become overactive, your hair takes on an oily and greasy look. Teenagers going through hormonal changes and individuals with fine hair are more prone to oily hair. Overuse of conditioners, weather conditions and excessive brushing are examples of other factors that can lead to oily hair.
Step 1
Wash hair often with a mild shampoo. The Teens Health website from the Nemours Foundation suggests that you should wash your hair at least once a day to control oil. During hot and humid weather, you may need to wash the hair twice a day.
Step 2
Leave the shampoo on for several minutes. After lathering, keep the shampoo on the scalp for approximately three to five minutes before rinsing. Repeat shampooing after rinsing to mop up even more excess oil.
Step 3
Skip a conditioner. If you have oily hair, the ingredients in conditioners are likely to worsen the condition and weigh down your hair. Instead, if you need to condition the hair, spray the ends only with a leave-in conditioner. The type of leave-in conditioner that you use should be labeled oil-free.
Step 4
Dry the oil out of the hair with a beer finishing rinse. Fill an empty squirt bottle with any variety of beer. After shampooing the hair, spritz the entire head of hair with the beer. No need to wash out the beer since the smell typically disappears after several minutes.
Step 5
Put hair powder on the roots to eliminate oily hair. Fitness Magazine recommends a small sprinkling of hair powder on the roots of your mane. The powder absorbs excess oil from the scalp. This also can be done when you are unable to shampoo the oily hair.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have oily hair, it is important to keep it pulled away from the face. If the hair touches the face, oil transference can take place and increase your likelihood of acne breakouts.
