Dry, itchy and irritated skin often stems from overexposure to water or dry air. Most of the time, dry skin is not a serious health concern, states MayoClinic.com. It can, however, be uncomfortable and unsightly. You may be able to treat mild to moderate dry skin at home by making an effort to keep your skin well-moisturized. If your skin is severely dry, extremely itchy or painful, or if you experience bleeding or open sores, see your doctor or dermatologist.

Step 1

Take short, lukewarm showers. MayoClinic.com states that hot water and overexposure to any water can strip moisturizing oils from your skin. Try to be in and out of the shower in 15 minutes or less, and use a gentle moisturizing cleanser in place of a drying soap.

Step 2

Pat your skin dry with a towel. While your body is still damp, apply a thick, greasy moisturizer. MedlinePlus suggests avoiding products that contain alcohol, which can exacerbate your dryness. MayoClinic.com recommends using baby oil if your skin is extremely dry.

Step 3

Apply a cool compress to any areas that are itchy or painful. If a particular area is inflamed, MayoClinic.com suggests using an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream.

Step 4

Keep your skin hydrated by drinking a lot of water throughout the day. Run a humidifier if your home is dry, especially at night in your bedroom.

Tips and Warnings

  • Bathe or shower less often, if possible, suggests MedlinePlus, to allow your natural skin oils to build up and keep your skin supple.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild cleanser
  • Towel
  • Thick moisturizer or baby oil
  • Cool compress
  • Hydrocortisone cream (optional)
