Collagen is a fibrous protein with remarkable tensile strength. There are 16 known types of collagen, but types I, II and III are the most common ones found in the body. Collagen makes up about one-fourth of all the protein in your body and plays an essential role in strengthening and supporting your tendons, skin, bones, teeth and internal organs.
Step 1
Eat a diet rich in vitamin C. A vitamin C deficiency inhibits the production of collagen and can cause scurvy. Many fruits and vegetables contain a rich supply of vitamin C, including oranges, tomatoes, berries and peppers.
Step 2
Stop smoking. The chemicals in cigarettes damage both the collagen and elastin in your skin, resulting in premature aging.
Step 3
Avoid tanning beds. Wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. According to the World Health Organization, UV radiation damages collagen in the skin, causing wrinkles.
