Heartburn, otherwise known as acid indigestion, is a common condition that affects millions of Americans each day. The burning sensation people feel starts in the upper part of the abdomen and slowly works its way up to the chest and throat and can radiate to the arms, and jaw. Heartburn is caused by stomach acid that works its way up toward the esophagus. Lifestyle changes can help prevent heartburn. Some people have found that the use of simple household remedies can help alleviate common symptoms, although if symptoms persist a health care professional should be consulted.
Soothing Foods
According to Martie Whittekin, author of Natural Alternatives to Nexium, Maalox, Tagamet, Prilosec & Other Acid Blockers, some of the foods in your kitchen can remedy heartburn. Papaya can help heartburn as it contains papain, which reduces acid in the stomach. Papaya tablets can be purchased at health food stores or you can eat the fruit after a meal. Pineapple contains bromelian, which is a digestive enzyme, and eating a few fresh slices after a meal can aid in digestion and prevent heartburn. Watermelon as well as banana can also reduce acid in the stomach that results in heartburn.
Herbs
An assortment of herbs are reported to help tame the symptoms of heartburn. David Hoffman, author of "Healthy Digestion," states that herbs such as licorice root and chamomile can help decrease stomach acid. Slippery elm helps absorb the acid and coats the esophagus, reducing irritation. Ginger can help relax the esophagus and reduce heartburn. All these herbs can be made into herbal tea by adding the dried herb to hot water and letting the mixture steep. At the first signs of heartburn, strain away the solids and try drinking a warm cup of one of these helpful herbal teas.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Paul Bragg, the author of "Apple Cider Vinegar Miracle Health System," believes apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a good remedy for heartburn. By mixing two tablespoons of unfiltered ACV in one cup of water and drinking it before you eat, it may alleviate heartburn symptoms. This is reportedly because some people do not have enough acid in their stomachs and heartburn can be caused by too little acid in the stomach. ACV can imitate stomach acids and aids in balancing the alkaline in the stomach. You can add honey or agave nectar to help with the taste of the ACV.
