The Eastern Shore of Maryland--the sliver of land in Maryland east of the Chesapeake Bay and west of Delaware--is one of the few remaining spots of rural beauty left in America. The shore offers lots the waterfront attractions and boating the region is known for, but also has a good amount of camping grounds in numerous woods and public parks. So grab your tent, pack your S'mores and head over to the Eastern Shore.
Holiday Park Campground
Located on 200 acres off the Choptank River in Greensboro, Maryland, Holiday Park is a site where you can camp without losing modern entities. The site allows you to either pitch a tent or pull up with your RV. The campground comes with electricity and water, free Wi-Fi, cable TV, a camp store and an activity building. There is also a swimming pool, four playgrounds for the kids and basketball, volleyball and shuffleboard courts. Holiday Park charges a fee to rent a camp site where you set up. Rates depend on the time of year and your electricity needs.
Tuckahoe State Park
In its picturesque location next to Tuckahoe Creek in Queen Anne's County, Tuckahoe State Park is truly a place where you can get back to nature. The park offers 20 miles of scenic hiking, kayaking, hunting and picnicking, as well as a playground for the kids. There are 51 camping sites in the park, 33 with electrical hookups. Each site has a camping pad, picnic table and fire ring. There is a central bathhouse for showers and bathroom trips, although there is no central water hookup. There are also four cabins located on the site, which must be reserved through the state park system.
Pocomoke River State Park
Pocomoke River State Park is 15,000 wooden acres of forest located in the heart of the Delmarva Peninsula, Worcester County. There are two campsite areas within the park--Shad Landing and Milburn Landing.
Shad Landing is the bigger of the two, with 175 camp sites and a marina with 23 boat slips. Each site has its own fire pit and picnic table. The campsite contains centrally located bathhouses wit toilets, hot showers and a laundry tub. Some of the campsites do come with electric hookups and there is a dumping site for sewage and portable water. Campers are required to register with the park. Sites are limited to six campers and two cars a piece.
Milburn Landing on has 32 campsites and amenities are limited. However, pets are allowed.
The state park does have a swimming pool at Shad Landing, but the real attraction here is the miles of hiking, kayaking, fishing and hunting available throughout.
Martinak State Park
One of the Shore's smaller state parks, Martinak State Park contains only 63 camp sites--33 with electric hookups. Each camp site has a fire ring, picnic table and camping pad. The big attraction at Martinak is the fishing and boating--the park has a boat ramp and the nearby Choptank River and Watts Creek have an abundance of bass, perch and catfish. However, there is also a playground, a nature center and a hiking trial.
Camping at the Beach--Assateague State Park
In the battle for "Most Relaxing Activity," the beach and camping are certainly in the top five. Assateague State Park, located nine miles from the Maryland's crown jewel beach--Ocean City--manages to combine both. Assateague contains 350 camping sites and offers a ton of activities, including boating, biking, kayaking, fishing and of course, the beach. Each camp site comes with a fire ring and a picnic table. During the summer, the park offers a free movie for campers under the stars and a nature center featuring some of the critters occupying the waters around the park.
