Hiking Safety Rules

Hiking can be an enjoyable, adventurous and educational activity. However, if you do not take the proper precautions, it can become quite dangerous. This is true for experienced hikers as well as those who are walking a trail with young children.

Walk With a Friend

Don't go hiking by yourself, especially if you are walking trails or paths that you are not familiar with. Suppose you are alone and get injured. You will not have anyone to help you if you are by yourself. While you may be hiking to get away from it all, always take a cell phone with your in case you get lost; you can always turn off your ringer.

Bring Plenty of Water

Drink an average of one bottle of water per hour if you are hiking in the heat of summer. Three bottles is around the maximum amount of water you will want to carry, as it can weigh you down. Under no circumstances should you hike without water.

Unfamiliar Plants and Animals

Do not touch any plants that you are not familiar with. The same holds true for animals. Poisonous plants can cause illness or skin rashes. Do not touch a plant just because it looks attractive. That beautiful plant could cause problems in a matter of moments, or hours.
