Dry, damaged, hair that is prone to breakage can be caused by a variety of factors. The causes can be environmental, such as pollution and harsh hair styling tools and solutions. Stress can affect hair health, as can poor diet and certain health issues and medications. However, just as there many reasons for poor hair health and hair loss, there are also many things that promote hair growth.

Healthy Diet

The first line of defense against hair loss and damage is a healthy diet, rich in the vitamins and nutrients that help hair grow and thrive. Protein and iron are necessary to hair growth and maintenance, as are vitamin A, the B vitamins, and vitamins C, D and E. Other nutrients that promote health hair growth are essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6, zinc, copper, selenium and silica. Cutting out the fast foods and processed foods in favor of a balanced diet of wholesome, fresh foods can make a big difference in your overall health, as well as the appearance and strength of your hair. Supplementing that healthy diet with a good multivitamin that contains these essential nutrients can be helpful as well.

Scalp Massage and Conditioning

Massaging the scalp with natural oils, such as olive, coconut, almond, rosemary, sesame or lavender oil can help condition the scalp to alleviate dryness. A vigorous scalp massage can increase blood flow to the scalp, stimulating hair follicles, as well as helping to slough away dry, flaky, dead skin. To do this, place a few tablespoons of natural oil in a bowl, then apply it with your fingertips directly to the scalp. Once the scalp is coated, start massaging at the front hairline, applying a bit of pressure with the fingertips using a circular motion. Move along gradually until you reach the base of the skull, then start again at the front hairline and repeat the process, only with a bit more pressure and more vigorous finger motion. Once the massage is complete, leave the oil on the scalp for half an hour or so to condition it, then wash it away with a gentle shampoo.

Essential Oils

Essential oils have been said to promote hair growth for many years. According to a study published in the Archives of Dermatology, done by Isabelle C. Hay, et. al., these claims have some scientific backing. A combination of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedarwood essential oils were combined with grape seed and jojoba carrier oils, then massaged into the scalp. Forty-four percent of study participants had a significant increase in hair growth after using these oils for seven months.
