Oily hair can occur for a variety of reasons. Hormone fluctuations, such as those that occur during adolescence, can cause the sebaceous glands to produce too much oil. In addition, poor hygiene or overstyling can contribute to greasy hair. Although oily hair can be embarrassing, there are many ways to remedy it right from the comfort of your own home.
Talcum Powder
According to the Seventeen Magazine, talcum powder can help remedy oily hair. To use it, sprinkle the powder at your roots and blend into your hair with your fingers. Run a brush or comb through your hair to be sure you have no noticeable white spots. Talcum powder works by absorbing grease and making it less noticeable.
Shampoo Smart
For greasy hair, Discovery Health recommends using a gentle shampoo daily. Be sure it does not contain any extra conditioning agents or additives. In addition, oily hair requires a shampoo with a higher pH balance. Look for one containing 6.7 pH or higher. Or simply look for a shampoo designed for oily hair—they will typically contain higher pH balances.
For added grease-cutting power, add a couple of drops of dishwasher liquid to your shampoo. No matter what type of shampoo you use, be sure that you rinse it from your hair completely. Shampoo and soap residue can collect oil and dirt quickly, making hair appear greasy.
Brush Carefully
The U.S. National Library of Medicine warns against overbrushing your hair. Brushing your hair too often—or too roughly--can transport scalp oil all over your hair. In turn, your hair will look and feel oily.
Homemade Astringent
Make a homemade astringent to remedy the oil in your hair. Try mixing a shot glass of any kind of alcohol with a few cups of water. Rinse your hair with the solution to dry up any scalp oil. Alternatively, “The Doctors Book of Home Remedies” suggests combining equal parts mouthwash with witch hazel. Using a cotton pad, apply the mixture directly to your scalp every time you shampoo your hair. The witch hazel behaves as an astringent while the mouthwash soothes with its antiseptic abilities.
