Acne is caused by excessive bacteria, dead skin cells and sebum blocking the skin's pores. These blockages form what are commonly referred to as pimples. Several pimples that form at any given time constitute an acne flare-up, requiring treatment to clear the pores and eliminate infection. Before starting any treatment regimen, consult your dermatologist to find the root cause of your acne. Causes can be hormonal imbalance, illness or genetics.
Step 1
Cleanse your skin twice daily to remove excess oil and dead skin cells. Use a gentle skin cleanser that does not dry your skin. Removing makeup and dirt daily will lessen the chances of blockage formation.
Step 2
Apply an over-the-counter acne lotion containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These ingredients kill bacteria that makes its way into your pores, according to the Doctors Book of Home Remedies. For persistent acne, stronger versions of these lotions are available in prescription form from your dermatologist.
Step 3
Shampoo your hair regularly to prevent cross-contamination of oils from the hair to the skin. Pulling your hair back from your face will also keep hair oils off of the skin that may worsen acne symptoms.
Step 4
Apply an oil-free moisturizer to your skin after cleansing to lock in moisture and allow the skin to heal naturally. Opt for moisturizers labeled water-based or noncomodegenic to treat and prevent blockages. Makeup should also be oil free to avoid adding excess oils to the skin from cosmetic sources.
Step 5
Avoid picking or scratching acne blemishes. This will worsen acne conditions and can cause scarring of delicate skin. Touching your acne frequently also poses a risk of deeper infection and contamination of bacteria and oils.
