Restless legs syndrome, commonly referred to as RLS, is a condition marked by discomfort in the legs while sitting or lying down. RLS makes sitting for extended periods of time, traveling or sleeping difficult. It often compels a person to stand or move around to get relief from the restlessness they’re experiencing. Mild or moderate cases of RLS can be treated effectively with a combination of home remedies and lifestyle modifications. Consult your doctor if your condition persists.
Medications
Some persons experience tenderness or a sensation of soreness in their legs. Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever such as an NSAID, a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, can be effective in treating these symptoms. Ibuprofen is a commonly available NSAID that can be found in most pharmacies or grocery stores. Individuals should inform their physician that they are taking these medications.
Baths and Massages
Relaxing the leg muscles can be effective in helping a person to relax and fall asleep. Washing the legs in a circular motion in a warm bath using a washcloth or sponge can be helpful. After bathing and patting skin dry, RLS suffers can use a lotion or oil to massage leg muscles.
Warm and Cool Treatments
Some persons experience a tingling or burning sensation in their legs. Warm or cool compresses can reduce this irritation. A warm compress is made by saturating a clean towel with warm water and warming it slightly in the microwave. A bag of frozen vegetables or ice placed in a clean, dry towel will serve as a cold compress. Warm compresses can be applied to various parts of the legs until the towel cools. Cold compresses should be applied for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
Stress Relief Techniques
The Mayo Clinic indicates that stress can exacerbate symptoms of RLS. Keeping stress under control or participating in stress relief techniques can help. Meditation and yoga are two common relaxation methods. Meditation can be done practically anywhere at any time. Yoga is a simple form of meditative exercise, but persons should take care not to engage in yoga too soon before going to bed, as it can make it more difficult to get comfortable or fall asleep.
Avoid Stimulants
In an effort to reduce irritability and anxiety, persons should create a comfortable sleeping environment to promote a healthy sleeping regimen. The sleeping area should be free from clutter and distractions to facilitate a good night’s sleep.
