In badminton, opposing players use a racket to hit the shuttlecock over the net without allowing it to land on the ground. Since the racket is a key component of the game, players must use the correct grip to optimize hitting accuracy and power. According to the Badminton Bible website, players that learn to use a good badminton grip are able to control the racket face and strike the shuttlecock in any direction. Learning to hold the badminton racket correctly involves a few simple steps.

Step 1

Hold the racket with your nonplaying hand so the face is perpendicular to the ground and the handle points to you. Extend your playing hand as if you are preparing to shake hands and grab the racket.

Step 2

Position your hand so the bottom is even the edge of the racket handle. Your palm should rest securely on the handle and not extend below.

Step 3

Check your finger placement on the racket. The space between your index finger and thumb should create a V shape. Leave small gaps between the fingers and hold the racket with a relaxed grip. You are now using the forehand grip, which you should use for shots around your head and hits on your playing hand side.

Step 4

Extend your thumb against the handle for the backhand grip. You will use the backhand grip for shots on the side of your body opposite your playing hand. Your thumb gives you the leverage and control to successfully execute backhand shots.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keeping your fingers relaxed while you grip the racket allows your forearm muscles to work more effectively. Tighten your hand upon impact with the shuttlecock for greater power.
