According to the Acne.com, a website sponsored by Proactiv, there are five culprits when it comes to causing blemishes: hormones that begin at puberty; extra sebum that combines with bacteria to clog the follicle; dead skin cells shedding within the follicles; and bacteria, and an inflammatory response caused by the bacteria in the body. The Proactiv skin treatment system is made to address all of these problems.

History

The Proactiv 3-step Acne Treatment System was first introduced in June of 1995 by two dermatologists, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. Both have remained involved in the company, personally responding to users questions and training company advisors to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to answer the questions of those who purchase the treatment. With the exception of the addition of new products through the years, the formula remained unchanged until January 2010. At that time, the company introduced the new Proactiv formula.

Products

The Proactiv 3-step Acne Treatment System begins with the Renewing Cleanser. This oil-free formula exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells and impurities. Step two is the Revitalizing Toner, an alcohol-free liquid to balance the skin’s tone and natural acids. The final step in the Proactiv skin plan is the Repairing Treatment. This lotion is light and oil-free, but contains benzoyl peroxide to heal pimples and prevent breakouts from appearing in the future.

Mechanism

According to a company spokesperson, the only difference between the original formula of Proactiv and the new one is that the products now contain “micro-crystal benzoyl peroxide.” It is said to be better at penetrating clogged pores, but gentler on the skin. On his website The Dermatology Blog, Dr. Jeffrey Benabio notes that the Proactiv system works to stop the process of acne by using the benzoyl peroxide to exfoliate and kill bacteria.

Availability

The Proactiv skin treatment system for acne is only available through the company. You can purchase it online through the website, by phone or by mail order. There are also some kiosks for Proactiv available in malls and airports. Once you have purchased the initial Proactiv 3-step Acne Treatment System, you are known as an ActivMember. You may then buy additional products from Proactiv, like body washes and makeup remover pads.

Considerations

According to Benabio, the Proactiv skin treatment plan works well for many of those with acne because the system is created to be used every day. He also acknowledges that benzoyl peroxide is a good choice for acne because it works well, but is fairly mild on the skin. If you do see any irritation to your skin while using Proactiv products, discontinue use until directed to continue by your doctor.
