No one appreciates lies, especially coming from the lips of a girlfriend or romantic interest. Unfortunately, most people aren't very good at detecting the lies of others, according to Forbes. Most of us are naturally trusting, especially when someone pays us a compliment. While there is no foolproof way of recognizing a lie, there are some subtle signs you can look for that might indicate a girl is being less than fully honest with you.

Step 1

Look at the upper half of her face. People tend to be more adept at controlling their expressions in the bottom halves of their faces, reports facial expression expert Paul Ekman on the Australian Broadcasting Company's website. If a person is trying to suppress an emotion or to fake one they're not feeling, the truth is generally most detectable in the upper half of the face, Ekman says.

Step 2

Gently push her for details. Fabricated stories tend to lack detail, Forbes reports. The more details you seek, the more likely you'll be to catch an inconsistency or hole in the story that could indicate she's lying. If it turns out she's telling the truth, you'll simply seem interested in the details of what she's saying.

Step 3

Listen to speech patterns. People who are lying may be more prone to stuttering, pauses in speech, and slowed speech, says professor of psychology Aldert Vrij on the Australian Broadcasting Service's website. They may also speak in a higher pitch, Forbes says. However, there's one small catch: people will only exhibit these signs if they're anxious about the lie.

Step 4

Be honest with yourself. This may sound like an odd way to guard against lies, but many people believe lies out of willing denial, says University of Massachusetts professor of psychology Robert Feldman in Forbes. For example, of course you'll want to believe her when she says she loves you, but take a step back and analyze whether her behavior supports these words. Don't believe it just because you want to.
