Montana is known for big vistas, rugged peaks, abundant wildlife and glacier carved valleys. Numerous outdoor recreation activities exist throughout the state and in Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. Two types of camping are offered in Montana. You can opt for the traditional backpacking, tent or RV experience or you can try camping in a luxury tent.
Where to Camp
Luxury camping, or glamping as it is affectionately known, is available at The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana, located in west-central Montana, 35 miles from Missoula and three hours from Glacier National Park. These canvas sided tents are 270-square-feet of luxury including a king-sized bed outfitted with natural fiber linens, a desk, dresser, chairs, full-length mirror and electric lamps. A solar lighted path leads to your own master bathroom featuring heated tiled floors, a large shower and a granite topped vanity stocked with organic skincare products. There are three luxury tent camping locations available to choose from: a pine forest, creek or river. Luxury camping is available in the summer and fall only.
Campground Amenities
Three healthy and indigenous gourmet meals are included in your daily camping fee and are served in an equally luxurious dining pavilion complete with a round stone fireplace, comfortable seating and a lounge/gaming area. Twice-daily housekeeping service is provided. In addition, your private butler is available to tend to your every need. A full-service spa and fitness center offering daily yoga classes is also located in the camping area.
Campground Activities
S’mores are prepared at the nightly bonfire. Take a two-hour discovery hike with a naturalist guide to explore the resort’s river, meadows and mountains. Head to the stables for a guided horseback ride with an experienced wrangler or take a day to participate in a cattle drive. You can also fly-fish for trout on the campground river after obtaining a Montana fishing license in advance online.
Whitewater Adventures
The high-water months of June and July make whitewater on the Blackfoot River one of Montana’s best experiences. Rent an inflatable kayak for a four-hour trip with a river guide through a downstream adventure of rapids among rock outcroppings and short canyons. Or take a full-day whitewater rafting adventure on the Class III and IV rapids of the Clark Fork River. Along the way you’ll see views of the Alberton Gorge’s rose-colored cliffs and possibly spot deer, elk, moose or bears along the shoreline.
Mountain Biking
The hundreds of miles of old logging roads running through the campground property are available to you for mountain biking. You’ll find trails of all lengths and difficulty to achieve just the workout you were looking for. Or take the challenge of the 15-mile and 2,500 elevation drop of the Garnet Downhill Mountain Bike Adventure taking you past the gold mining ghost town of Garnet and down the mountain through conifer forests.
