Dirt biking offers a chance to relax and have fun on the often wooded bike trails--or ATV trails--if you are into casual pursuit of the sport. Or biking can offer the healthful benefits of competitive sport if you are into racing your bike. Across the country, trail and track parks or centers also offer campgrounds for visiting bikers. Camping only enhances the benefits of the sport. Pennsylvania is no exception.
Pennsylvania considerations
The state seems destined to be a leader in the sport. Its geography lends itself to many prime tails and campgrounds in restful settings. Those include paths through woods across scenic vistas. However, the trails can get rough, running across old surface mines and on one trail, though a mine. Pennsylvania is also the third-leading state in ATV sales. There is a controversy over the need for more ATV trails in the state, but this article looks at existing trails and campgrounds.
Geography
Pennsylvania is a large state with lots of wooded and rural areas. The Allegheny Mountains run diagonally from the southwest to the northeast with piedmont and coastal plains in the southeast. Abandoned mining areas also make for good ATV runs.
Campgrounds With Dirt Bike Trails
Campgrounds teamed with dirt bike trails or tracks can be found in a national forest, state forests and a state park. Not to be out done are the private offerings, which often include RV or primitive camping. Seasonal details and fees vary.
National Forest
Willow Creek ATV trail is a 10.8-mile loop trail across forested vistas in Allegheny National Forest, near Marienville. Annual ATV/bike trail permit is $35. Call ahead for reservations.
State Forests
Two dirt bike trails grace Bald Eagle State Forest. The Seven Mountains Ramble and Shade Mountain trails are both located in parts of Mifflin, Snyder and Union counties. One section of Sproul State Forest, Clinton County, is open to ATV use. The area is near the Huling Branch of Two Mile Run and built on old forest and coal mining roads and unreclaimed surface mining areas. Also, trails run through Buchanan State Forest and Delaware State Forest near Scranton. Michaux State Forest near Gettysburg. Susquehannock State Park in southern Lancaster County has tent camping for organized groups.
County Areas
In Cambria County, the new $5 million Rock Run Recreation Area near Patton has 6,000 acres of ATV trails.
Private Campgrounds With Trails
Just like at public sites, riders must obey scores of regulations while riding private trails to avoid injury. One of the most attractive is Mines and Meadows ATV Resort, and even the name of the nearby town has a charm--Wampum. For $25, you probe a former limestone mine, cross a flowing river and ride rocky ridges. At the Breezewood Proving Grounds in south central Pennsylvania, riding is $40 before 5 p.m.
Other private offerings can be found dotting the state, such as the trails in the Majestic Allegheny Mountain region of northwest Pennsylvania, those near near Central City and Slippery Rock. Also, one is near Fredericksburg and another can be found at Clinton. Both have relatively inexpensive fees. Some sites require memberships and accompanying fees.
