Soaking in herbal bath salts can ease sore muscles and relax a tense body. Herbal bath salts are an easy project to work on at home. Even children can make bath salts if they have adult supervision. Though you can use plain Epsom salts for your bath, adding herbs and a little coloring makes the salts smell and look nicer. Homemade herbal bath salts also make a thoughtful, inexpensive gift.
Step 1
Pour the Epsom salts into the bowl. MayoClinic.com recommends Epsom salt baths to help relieve the symptoms of psoriasis. Epsom salts contain magnesium, which helps decrease inflammation in sore muscles and joints.
Step 2
Use the eye dropper to add a few drops of your favorite herbal essential oil to the bowl. Mix the salt and oil thoroughly. Lavender oil has a soothing fragrance that works well if you want to relax before bedtime. Use eucalyptus or peppermint oils to add an invigorating scent. For a more feminine touch, use such floral fragrances as rose or lily of the valley.
Step 3
Stir in the glycerin. Glycerin moisturizes your skin and makes the bath salts a little more luxurious. This ingredient also helps keep your herbal bath salts from clumping up.
Step 4
Add three to four drops of food coloring to the salt mixture. Stir to mix well. Keep stirring until the color is distributed throughout the mixture. Add more food coloring for deeper tones. Choose a color that complements your fragrance. For instance, use purple for lavender, pink for rose and green for eucalyptus. Food coloring makes the bath salts more attractive. It also slightly tints the bath water.
Step 5
Spoon the salts into a glass jar with a lid. Add a label.
Step 6
Add a few tablespoons of the herbal bath salts mixture to your bath water.
