Mercury is a naturally occurring substance that can be fatal when patients are exposed to or consume it in high concentrations. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, there are three types of mercury that can be dangerous: liquid mercury, inorganic mercury salts and organic mercury. Patients should be aware of the symptoms of mercury poisoning in order to seek medical attention in
a timely manner.

Side Effects of Elemental Mercury

Although elemental mercury is generally harmless when touched or even swallowed, it poses significant risk when it is concentrated in the air and is inhaled, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. Over time, patients may begin to sense a metallic taste resulting in nausea or vomiting. Some patients have experienced swollen, bleeding gums. Because the inhaling of elemental mercury is the most dangerous, patients often experience difficult breathing or the
development of a recurring cough. Severe cases of elemental mercury poisoning can cause permanent lung damage, brain damage and even death.

Side Effects of Inorganic Mercury Salts

Inorganic mercury salts are considered dangerous if swallowed. Patients may experience a burning sensation in the stomach and throat. Over time, patients may suffer from nausea, vomiting or bloody diarrhea. Should inorganic mercury enter the blood stream, the patient may sustain permanent kidney damage, kidney failure or brain damage. Severe cases or overdose of inorganic mercury salts can result in death.

Side Effects of Organic Mercury

Organic mercury is often considered the most dangerous because it can be fatal if touched, swallowed or inhaled. Organic mercury is often present in fish which is why physicians often advise pregnant women to reduce or cease their consumption of fish while pregnant. Patients often experience numbness or pain after being exposed to organic memory. Some patients may shake uncontrollably or develop seizures. Over time, patients may develop an unsteady gait or have
difficulty remembering things or concentrating. Blindness or double vision may occur. Similar to other forms of mercury, severe cases of exposure to organic mercury can turn fatal.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

If you are exposed to or consume any form of mercury, contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at (800)-CDC-INFO or (800) 232-4636 and visit your local emergency room for immediate attention.
