Dark circles and the oft-associated under-eye bags have numerous potential causes, according to Columbia University's health services. The university recommends applying cold compresses, drinking more water and sleeping with your head elevated above your body to get rid of dark circles and bags. If that doesn't work, an over-the-counter eye cream can help. For the best results, choose an eye cream that beauty experts have highlighted as effective.
Olay Regenerist Eye Regenerating Cream
Olay takes its original anti-aging eye cream and adds mineral pigments in the form of titanium dioxide. The two work together so exceptionally that skin care expert Paula Begoun awarded it a "Paula's Pick" designation. She loved its use of vitamin-based antioxidants, skin-conditioning peptides and niacinamide, which help rejuvenate the eye area. Meanwhile, the mineral pigments immediately camouflage dark circles and other blemishes.
Cosmedicine Opti-mologist
Self magazine's beauty editors recommend Cosmedicine's water-free eye cream as a top solution for treating under-eye circles and bags. Beneficial ingredients include skin-brightening licorice extract, skin-tightening caffeine, peptides and yeast extract. The manufacturer also adds powdered crystal particles to help diffuse and reflect light for an instantly more illuminated look to the dark eye area.
Peter Thomas Roth Power K Eye Rescue
The editors of Shape magazine suggest using Peter Thomas Roth's cream to reduce and prevent under-eye darkness, whether it's caused by fatigue or skin injuries. Active ingredients include pigment-lightening acids, coenzyme Q10--a potent antioxidant that helps with a wide array of skin problems, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center--and light-diffusing pigments. Sensitive skin individuals will be pleased to know that the cream contains no dyes, sulfates, phthalates or fragrances.
Patricia Wexler Under-Eye Brightening Cream
The manufacturer of this skin brightening cream, which is formulated to target dark circles around the eyes, has made an "impressive blend" of beneficial ingredients, Begoun says. This includes light-reflecting minerals, skin-repairing antioxidants and skin-soothing anti-irritants. Begoun concludes that it's state-of-the-art, recommending its use on the entire face for a brighter complexion.
