Hair problems, such as brittle, dull hair prone to breakage and hair thinning or loss, can stem from a variety of causes. Rough treatment while styling hair can cause damage, such as the use of blow dryers and other heated hair appliances. Harsh shampoos and styling products can dry hair excessively, making it dull and lifeless. Poor nutrition can also affect hair, causing dryness, breakage and even hair loss, as can hormonal changes and certain health issues and medications. However, some herbal treatments and supplements can help repair the daily damage done to hair, promoting hair health and normal growth.

Natural Oils

Moisturizing your hair with natural oils can enhance the texture and strength of dry or damaged hair. Among the natural oils that are useful for conditioning hair are almond, sesame, coconut, canola and olive oils. Treatments for fine textured hair are best done with lighter oils, like almond or sesame, while coarser textures can be treated with heavier oils, such as coconut, canola or olive oil. For a conditioning hot oil treatment, pour two to four tablespoons of oil, depending upon hair length and thickness, into a bowl and set it over a pan of boiling water to warm. Once the oil is lukewarm, gently work it through damp hair. Once the hair is thoroughly coated, cover it with a plastic shower cap or bag to contain drips, then wrap with a hot towel. After allowing the oil to soak in for at least 30 minutes, wash it away with a gentle shampoo and allow hair to air dry.

Herbal Oils

Herbal oils are very easy to make at home. Natural oils, such as almond, olive, canola or soybean oil can be combined with herbs that are beneficial to hair. Among these are rosemary and chamomile, which are often used to add softness and shine to hair, and lavender, which adds a pleasant fragrance to the hair. This can be done by combining a cup of oil with a half cup of herbs in a bowl, then placing it over a pan of boiling water to warm for about half an hour. Then, place it in a glass jar and set it in a warm place for about a week. Your homemade herbal oil can then be used as a hot oil treatment for the hair or be massaged into the scalp for conditioning and hair follicle stimulation.

Feed Your Hair

Supplementing your diet with a higher intake of certain nutrients can encourage healthy hair growth. Vitamins that help in growing and maintaining hair include B vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E. Essential fatty acids support healthy hair, as do proteins and minerals that include silica, zinc, iron and copper. While these nutrients are absorbed by the body most easily from wholesome foods, good quality supplements can be used to boost intake of them as well.
