Hair on the face and chin can be an annoyance for many women. It can be caused by hormonal imbalances or genetics. Minimizing the appearance of the hair or removing it all together is the goal for many women who do not want to live with the facial hair. Whether it be thick and coarse or “peach fuzz”, they do not want it visible to others. Many methods for minimizing or getting rid of chin and facial hair are temporary and become part of a woman’s beauty routine.

Step 1

Shave. Wet the area thoroughly with warm water for at least 5 minutes. Apply a shaving cream to the area. Shave in the direction that your hair grows in. Shaving can cause nicks and razor bumps and hair can grow back quickly.

Step 2

Pluck. After a shower or bath, use a pair of tweezers to grab a hair at the base. Pull the skin taut against your chin. Pluck one hair at a time in the direction of hair growth. This method can be time-consuming and painful.

Step 3

Use a depilatory cream. Apply the cream to the chin, cheek and/or upper lip. Do not rub in. Follow the recommended time limits as stated on the product label. Do not allow the cream to dry. Remove the cream with a wet cloth; do not scrub. Depilatory creams can irritate or burn the skin and they can have unpleasant odors.

Step 4

Wax. Heat the strips of wax. Apply to the skin. Hold skin taut and pull off in one quick motion, in the opposite direction of hair growth. Waxing is painful. The skin will also be irritated after waxing and the irritated skin may be visible to others.

Tips and Warnings

  • Visit your doctor if the above mentioned methods do not work. They may prescribe eflornithine (Vaniqa), which is used to slow the growth of hair on the face of women.
