Many weight loss programs require the purchase of pills, accessories or prepared food, making the weight loss experience an expensive one. You can also choose to eat cheap fast food and pile on the pounds, rather than shed them. While it might seem impossible, it’s possible to reach a compromise.

Step 1

Eat at home more often. According to Bankrate, cooking at home allows you to control the amount of calories in your dish. You can easily make substitutions to reduce fat and sugar content as well. To save money, make your own meals based on recipes that require only simple basic ingredients and that can be easily adapted to your calorie requirements.

Step 2

Do your own housework. Rake the leaves, wash and wax your car, wash the windows and mow the lawn by yourself. If you do it long enough, you’ll be burning a good amount of calories. According to Bankrate, you can burn about 100 calories for a 20-minute wash as well as save a few dollars.

Step 3

Walk or bike everywhere. You’ll save on gas, get some exercise and fresh air and help the environment as well. On weekends, take the kids to the park or for a bike ride instead of heading to the movies or the video arcade. The savings can be significant, and you’ll get some exercise.

Step 4

Eat less. Stop supersizing, ordering the extra-large portions or getting the maxi dishes in the menu. Even if the difference is just a few cents, you are still saving. And the savings in calories will be significant. For example, a plain cheeseburger from McDonald’s has 300 calories and 12 grams fat, according to McDonald’s official website. A Quarterpounder with Cheese, on the other hand, has 530 calories and 28g fat.
