Obesity is on the rise, and more people are turning to supplements to aid in their fat loss efforts. The key to losing weight with fat burners is to use them as an addition to a solid nutritional and exercise program. Below are several products that can help speed up your progress; but remember that these supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease.

Caffeine

Author David Robson reports “many are turning to caffeine in its most common form, coffee, or as a supplement to hasten lipolysis, or the breakdown of adipose tissue. Caffeine's metabolite paraxanthine mobilizes fatty acids to be used as fuel in place of glycogen. Caffeine is also thought to increase the thermogenic effect of food, which helps with total energy expenditure and weight loss.” Robson is basically saying that caffeine helps your body burn fat for energy, thus reducing fat stores around the body. Caffeine is a popular product in most fat burning supplements, and can be found in coffee, tea and a host of other products. Because caffeine is such a popular compound, most people have developed a high tolerance to it. To optimize caffeine’s effects, try using it sparingly, or only when needed. Consult a health care professional before adding caffeine to your supplement program.

CLA

Conjugated Linolic Acid, or CLA, is a common supplement found in many grocery stores and pharmacies. CLA is a fatty acid found in trace amounts in dairy and meat products. Not all fats or fatty acids make you fat. Bodybuilder Mike Hajoway asserts that, “CLA supplementation was also shown to improve the lean-mass to body-fat ratio, decreasing fat deposition, especially on the abdomen, and enhancing muscle growth. CLA achieves this reaction by it reduces body fat by enhancing insulin sensitivity so that fatty acids and glucose can pass through muscle cell membranes and away from fat tissue. This results in an improved muscle to fat ratio.” CLAs are very popular among low-carb dieters since they may help the body metabolize fats for fuel, which can boost energy levels. The research on CLA supplementation is ongoing and is not considered conclusive, either as to the efficacy or the side effects. Seek the advice of a professional before adding it into your supplement program.

Green Tea

A study in 2002 by Chantre and Lairon showed, “the effects of extract AR25 (green tea) were evaluated in moderately obese patients. After 3 months, body weight was decreased by 4.6 percent and waist circumference by 4.48 percent. These results suggest the green tea extract AR25 to be a natural product for the treatment of obesity, which exerts its activity by several ways: inhibition of lipases and stimulation of thermogenesis.” In laymen’s terms, this study showed that increasing your green tea intake will result in a decrease of the absorption of fats. Overall fat burning will also increase. Enjoy green tea either in an over-the-counter fat burner, or in its beverage form.
