How to Apply an Ace Bandage

An Ace bandage, also known as an elastic bandage or wrap, is commonly wrapped around a dressing to keep it in place. The bandage also is used to apply pressure to an extremity and slightly reduce blood flow---causing swelling to decrease. An ice pack can be held in place to a sprained ankle or joint using the bandage.

How to wrap an elastic bandage

Step 1

Make two to three wraps around the body's most distal, or farthest, portion of the extremity. Wrap with light pressure. Do not wrap toes or fingers.

Step 2

Unroll the bandage and continue to wrap the extremity. Decrease the tension of the bandage as the bandage is worked towards the middle of the body. The pressure should be directed toward the center of the body---the outermost portion of the bandage should have the most pressure, decreasing as one works inward.

Step 3

Grip the end of the bandage and secure with metal clips. Tape and safety pins also can be used. Place a piece of tape over the clips to secure.

Tips and Warnings

  • Secure an icepack by placing the icepack on the injured area before wrapping
  • The toes and fingers are never covered so circulation can be checked and to ensure the bandage is not wrapped to tightly. A bandage that is wrapped too tightly can cause additional injuries.
