Caring for a baby is, at the least, a demanding task. No parent is perfect, and infants don't arrive with instructions. First-time fathers and mothers are often apprehensive when it comes to nurturing a baby. Teaching another person how to care for his child can be just as challenging as caring for the baby. However, with a little practice and a lot of patience, you can instruct new parents on how to handle the needs of their baby comfortably.
Step 1
Show each parent the proper way to hold an infant. Remind them always to support the baby's neck and head. During the first few months of life, a baby's neck muscles are not yet strong enough to hold the weight of her head. Without support, her head could bounce uncontrollably, possibly causing her pain or serious injury. Also, teach new parents to bring the baby close to their chest when they are holding her. This makes the infant feel more secure and creates a sense of closeness between parent and child.
Step 2
Explain how to diaper a baby. Tell the parents that they should always diaper their baby on a surface that protects him from falling, and they should never leave the baby unattended, even for a moment. Remind them to clean the baby's diaper area thoroughly when changing his diaper, to prevent rash.
Step 3
Teach crib safety. Parents should always put the baby to sleep on her back, to protect against suffocation. They also should make sure that the mattress fits snugly into the crib, so that the baby cannot get her head wedged between the mattress and the crib. Remind parents to check for foreign objects in the crib before putting the baby to bed. Small items, such as the eyes of a stuffed animal, can present a choking hazard to the child. Also, tell them to remove extra blankets from the crib, so that the baby won't become tangled in them and possibly choke.
Tips and Warnings
- Encourage swaddling, or wrapping the baby snugly in a light blanket. This simulates the environment in the womb. Assure parents that there are no stupid questions when it comes to infant care. Encourage them to ask their doctor or other expert if they have any question about the health or safety of their baby.
- Educate parents on the dangers of shaking a baby, which could result in serious injury or death.
