An abundance of thermal spas and hot springs has helped to make the island of Ischia, in the Bay of Naples, a popular destination for health tourism. The rugged, volcanic countryside offers opportunities for energetic, outdoor pursuits, and the volcano--thankfully, now extinct--has left behind healing properties that are utilized in the island’s many high-end spa hotels. Despite its glamorous reputation, however, camping enthusiasts are not neglected.
Location
Ischia is located at the northern end of the Bay of Naples in the Tyrrhenian Sea and is a short, 22-mile, ferry ride from Naples. The largest of the islands in the Bay, Ischia is less well-known than its near neighbor, Capri, but can still get chaotic in the summer months. The lush landscape of pine and chesnut forests, golden beaches and craggy mountains was used for location shoots in the film "The Talented Mr. Ripley," and lend a dramatic backdrop for camping.
Campgrounds
The main campsite on Ischia is Paluba Camping, located a short walk from the Bagno San Pietro beach. There is space for tents, caravans and RVs, with full electric hook-ups. Trees and thatched roofs provide shelter from the sun, and there are furnished bungalows and apartments to rent. The campsite has two ball fields and can arrange horse-riding in the hills. Camping Mirage, overlooking Maronti Beach, has 50 spaces for tents, caravans and RVs, a full-service restaurant and ping-pong tables.
Attractions
Although Ischia is best known as a spa destination, the 23 miles of coastline, and the rugged interior provide much to keep keen hikers busy. Take a bus, or drive, to Montana and walk up the extinct volcano, Monte Epomeo. Swim from dozens of scenic beaches, water ski or snorkel in the clear, warm waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, or take the kids to the Museo del Mare for exhibits dedicated to marine life. Horse riding on thoroughbred Arabian horses is available from Aragona Arabians.
Spas
Travelers first came to Ischia seeking remedies for all manner of ailments, from rheumatism to digestive disorders, and the tradition continues today. Spend the day in the thermal waters of the spa Negumbo, which blends modern therapies with ancient cures, has relaxing gardens and offers refresher courses and training for masseurs. There are many public thermal baths, including Idroterme Olympus, located near Maronti Beach and Camping Mirage, which offers mud baths and inhalation treatments.
When to Go
Go in the spring or fall to get the best of the Mediterranean weather. Temperatures in the height of summer, when Ischia is at its busiest, can easily reach an uncomfortable 86 degrees F, although the sea air cools things down a little. August, when many Italians take their annual family vacatiion, can be chaotic and is best avoided. The campgrounds are open year-round and the winter is mild.
