Age spots pop up on your skin after you have been out in the sunlight for long periods of time, over an extended period of time. Age spots form on your skin when the amount of melanin increases, darkening the color of your skin. When you are in the sun, the UV rays break down the collagen and elastin in your skin. Collagen and elastin are what keeps your skin looking young and fresh. Without them, age spots form. The key to fighting age spots is to use the right treatments and take care of your skin the correct way.
Step 1
Rub buttermilk into your skin to fight age spots. Buttermilk contains a natural bleaching agent, that over several treatments can fight age spots and fade their dark color. Go to the grocery store and buy a carton of buttermilk. Pour about half a cup into a bowl, dip a cotton ball into the liquid, and rub into your age spots. Let the liquid evaporate.
Step 2
Rub lemon juice into your skin to fight age spots. Lemon juice works the same way that buttermilk does in that it contains a natural bleaching agent that fights age spots by fading them over time. Buy a bottle of lemon juice at the store or a bottle of lemon juice. Pour into a bowl and dip a cotton ball into the liquid. Rub onto your age spots, letting the liquid evaporate into your skin. Lemon juice can irritate your skin, so don't use this treatment if a rash or irritation develops.
Step 3
Stay out of the sun. It is essential you stay out of the sun if you want to fight age spots, because UV rays is the number one cause of age spots. If you have to go out in, cover your skin with long sleeves, long pants, a hat and sunglasses. Make sure you wear an SPF sunscreen of at least 30 on your skin all over your body.
Step 4
Use an over-the-counter medication designed to fight age spots. Every pharmacy carries medication that can lighten your age spots. The Mayo Clinic recommends buying a medication in the form of a cream that contains the ingredients steroids, reinoids, or a bleach. If the over-the-counter creams don't work for you, visit your dermatologist for a stronger medication, such as hydroquinone or tretinoin.
Step 5
Exfoliate your skin to fight age spots. Go to your local pharmacy and buy a loofah with strong fibres. In the shower, use a mild soap on your loofah and scrub your age spots. The loofah will remove the top layer of skin where all dead skin and melanin is located. By scrubbing away this layer, you fight your age spots by lightening their color. Use the loofah several times a week to continually remove dead skin and keep your age spots light in color.
