All the things you do to your hair to make it look good—washing, heat styling, coloring, perming—can ultimately have the opposite effect: They can dry out your hair, leaving it looking dull and lifeless. Although the damage to the hair is, for all intents and purposes, irreparable—-hair is dead once it grows out of the scalp—the dry, frayed cuticle of the hair can be smoothed and lubricated so that the hair looks soft and shiny again. Try these home remedies to bring your dull strands back to life.
Avocado and Coconut Treatment
Step 1
Crack an egg and remove the yolk. Discard the whites or save for another use.
Step 2
Cut half of an avocado and combine it with the egg yolk in a small bowl. Mix well.
Step 3
Add enough coconut milk to make a smooth mixture that can easily be applied to the hair.
Step 4
Apply to the hair, fully covering each strand, and massage into the scalp.
Step 5
Allow the mixture to sit on the hair for 10 to 15 minutes, and then rinse well. Wrap your head loosely in a towel to keep the treatment from making a mess.
Hot Oil Treatment
Step 1
Combine two ounces of aloe vera gel, two ounces of castor or olive oil, six drops of rose geranium cedar essential oil, eight drops of rosemary essential oil and two drops of ginger essential oil, in a small microwaveable bowl.
Step 2
Heat the mixture in the microwave to warm it, testing it every 10 seconds. Do not heat it too much or you will scald your scalp when you apply it. If you do not have a microwave, you can heat the oils in a pan on the stove. Don't leave the pan while heating the oil.
Step 3
Test the mixture's temperature before applying. Apply the warm oil to the hair in sections and massage into scalp.
Step 4
Wrap your hair in a towel and let the mixture sit on your head for one hour. Rinse thoroughly.
