How to Calculate the Ideal Weight for a Man

The range of a man’s ideal weight depends on his height, according to a formula from Dr. Steven B. Halls. This calculation uses the body mass index, or BMI, to establish weight ranges specific to men. You’ll commonly use this procedure as a preliminary screening method to determine if you’re within the recommended weight range for your height. A healthcare worker will be able to recommend a more specific weight goal.

Step 1

Measure your height and inches with a tape measure. Assume your height is 73 in. for this example.

Step 2

Convert BMI values from metric units to English units of measure. According to Dr. Stephen B. Halls, the normal BMI range falls between 20.7 and 26.4 kg/m^2. Convert these values to English units by dividing them by the number 703. This gives the normal BMI range as 0.0294 lb/in^2 to 0.0376 lb/in^2.

Step 3

Establish equations that will provide your ideal weight in terms of height. The BMI equals [Weight / (Height × Height)]. Solve this equation for Weight to get the equation Weight = Height × Height x BMI. Substitute the BMI values from step 2 to get a minimum weight of [Height × Height × 0.0294] pounds and a maximum weight of [Height × Height × 0.0376] pounds.

Step 4

Substitute your height in the equation [Height x Height x 0.0376] to get your maximum weight in pounds. If your height is 73 in., your maximum weight would be [73 × 73 × 0.0376] = 200 lbs.

Step 5

Use your height in the equation [Height × Height × 0.0294] to get your minimum weight in pounds. If your height is 73 in., your minimum weight would be [73 × 73 × 0.0294] = 157 lbs.
