Estrogen dominance is a phrase first used by John R. Lee, M.D. to describe a condition in which the levels of the hormone progesterone are much lower than they should be compared to estrogen levels. This creates a situation where the effects of estrogen are not counterbalanced in the body. According to Dr. Lee, this can cause symptoms such as irregular menstrual periods, decreased sex drive, weight gain around the abdomen, polycystic ovaries and breast cancer, among others. There are several ways to treat estrogen dominance.
Step 1
Eat a healthy diet rich in fiber, one that contains plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. This helps maintain a healthy digestive tract. According to Dr. Christiane Northrup, M.D., estrogen is excreted through the bowels, so it is important to keep the bowels moving to prevent the re-absorption of estrogen.
Step 2
Increase consumption of organic foods. Animals and produce are fed or sprayed with hormones to increase their growth rates, and these extra hormones are contained in their end products. Consumption of meats and food products containing these extra hormones can increase estrogen levels in the body. Look for foods that are labeled "hormone free."
Step 3
Increase exercise to maintain a healthy body weight. Estrogen is stored in body fat. According to Dr. Ronald Hoffman, aerobic exercise can help reduce the production of estrogen in the body. A brisk 30-minute walk, jog, swim or bike ride at least three times per week can provide the aerobic exercise needed to help reduce estrogen levels.
Step 4
Reduce alcohol consumption. According to Cornell University, alcohol consumption in women is thought to affect the way estrogen is broken down and secreted by the body. Increased alcohol consumption can lead to a significant increase in the levels of estrogen.
Step 5
Take a multivitamin every day. Estrogen dominance may be caused by the lack of some important nutrients. According to the website Energetic Nutrition, the levels of magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin E and zinc can be low in conjunction with estrogen dominance.
Step 6
Use a progesterone cream if the estrogen dominance is clearly due to low levels of progesterone. Determining if progesterone levels are low should be confirmed by tests performed by a physician. Progesterone creams should always be used under a doctor's care.
