While riding a ski lift requires only that you sit still, getting off the lift requires understanding how to exit the chair, preparation, focus, coordination and courtesy for your fellow skiers. Getting off a ski lift improperly can result in an embarrassing and potentially dangerous fall that can hurt not only you but those around you. With the proper technique and attention to what you are doing, you can exit and clear a ski lift chair smoothly and easily.

Step 1

Ensure that all of your personal belongings are in your possession. Put on any clothing such as hats, goggles or jackets you removed while on the ski lift.

Step 2

Remove the ski pole wrist straps from your wrists. Hold your ski poles in one hand, below the safety bar.

Step 3

Scoot toward the edge of the ski lift chair and lift the safety bar.

Step 4

Hold your ski poles up from the ground. Keep the tips of your skis or snowboard pointed up slightly so the back of your skis or snowboard meets the ground first. Watch for a sign that says "Unload Here" as an indication of to where to stand up. As the ski lift approaches the ground, point your skis or snowboard forward and place them on the ground. Stand up slowly.

Step 5

Allow the ski lift to push you along, then glide away from the ski lift chair to clear the area for others behind you that will exit the ski lift. In the event you fall, get up and clear the area as quickly as possible.
