A caddie in golf is the person who carries the golfer's clubs and gives him advice on which club to use when. Caddying requires a good deal of concentration and knowledge of the golf course to be effective. Physical fitness may also come into play on hot days or on hilly courses. Caddies are usually employed by private golf courses, country clubs or resorts. In practice, a caddie does much more than simply carry bags and advise on shots.

Step 1

Carry your client's golf bag around the course during his round. Try to find a comfortable position to hold each bag, and be careful not to dump his golf clubs on the ground.

Step 2

Clean off the clubs during the round if they become dirty. Dirt and grass can become wedged in the grooves, so you must ensure they are clean for the next time the club is used. Carry a damp towel to wipe off club faces, and used a golf tee to clean out grooves if necessary.

Step 3

Replace divots and ball marks on the green after shots are made. Wait until he has handed you the club to put back in the bag and begun to move on before you retrieve the divot. On the green, fix ball marks before the putt is made.

Step 4

Handle the flag stick for putts and chipping around the green. Always ask if the golfer wants the flag in or out on chips, and whether he would like you to hold it as a target on long putts before you pull it out. You must also replace the flag stick upon completion of the hole.

Step 5

Give advice on club selection and distances. If you are an employee of the course, you will know all the distances and nuances of the course. Share your knowledge to make his round as easy as possible.

Step 6

Watch for the golf ball after it has been hit. If the ball is hit off line and ends up somewhere it shouldn't, it is your job to let him know where it went out of bounds. This will give him a better opportunity to avoid penalties and find his golf ball.
