Excessive hair loss is a problematic condition and can be due to reasons such as stress, malnutrition, genetics, medical conditions and environmental toxins. According to the Herbs2000 website, you can lose as much as 100 hairs in the course of a day. When excessive hair loss occurs, those numbers increase and baldness or alopecia occurs. Home remedies are available for hair loss but are not a substitute for medical treatment. Consult with a health-care professional to discuss any potential risks.

Step 1

Boil equivalent amounts of rosemary and sage in a pot of water, strain and add the mixture to a minimal amount of castile soap to make a shampoo that will lather, according to the GrannyMed website. Use the shampoo on your scalp up to twice weekly. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, rosemary increases the circulation in the scalp, which will stimulate your hair follicles.

Step 2

Take a saw palmetto supplement orally, or you can use a shampoo that contains saw palmetto extract. Saw palmetto is a native remedy and used for the treatment of prostate enlargement. According to the GrannyMed website, saw palmetto influences testosterone and enzyme production, similar to hair loss medications, such as Propecia or the generic version finasteride.

Step 3

Mothernature.com recommends using biotin at 50 mcg daily combined with a vitamin B complex. The combination can help strengthen hair and prevent excessive hair loss, according to the Herbs2000 website. However, according to UMMC, the lack of clinical evidence suggests that exceeding the daily recommended intake of biotin will promote hair growth.

Step 4

Take 1 tbsp. of flaxseed oil daily with food every morning. The fatty acids in flaxseed oil help to restore the moisture and eliminate itching and flaking from the scalp. Dr. Hope Fay, a naturopathic doctor in Seattle, Washington, notes that oils that contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are good fats and important for healthy skin and hair.

Step 5

Take an iron supplement, or eat more food that contains iron. A deficiency in iron can lead to hair loss, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Increasing the daily intake of iron by eating iron-rich foods, such as red meat, soybeans, tofu and broccoli, might reduce hair loss and promote hair growth.

Step 6

Combine two beaten eggs with 2 tbsp. of water and apply the mixture to wet hair. Massage your scalp and head for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, then using lukewarm water, rinse your hair. According to the Ygoy website, the egg massage technique helps to control dandruff and prevents hair loss.

Tips and Warnings

  • Excessive hair loss may be an indicator of an underlying health condition, if the symptom persists; it is advisable to seek medical help. Eating a well-balanced diet is essential for overall health, including healthy hair.
