Combined with healthy oils, beeswax becomes a protecting and soothing salve for the skin and lips. Beeswax has been an ingredient in cosmetics for generations, but since World War II, lanolin and paraffin have become common replacements. Neither are as beneficial for the skin or lips as beeswax, according to the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension. Start with a basic lip gloss, then experiment with a variety of essential oils to add flavor or aroma, creating a lip gloss that is uniquely yours.

Step 1

Warm 1/4 cup of oil in the top of a double boiler. Choose skin-healthy oils such as sweet almond oil, coconut oil or olive oil. Melt in 1/4 oz. of grated beeswax. Remove the warm mixture from the heat and use a stick blender or electric mixer to whip the mixture until it turns creamy.

Step 2

Drop in 4 to 5 drops of the essential oil of your choice, such as vanilla, apple, tangerine, berry or peppermint. Avoid kitchen flavorings, which contain alcohol. Alternatively, add fresh ingredients to flavor your lip gloss. YGoy Beauty Tips suggests 10 fresh cranberries or three chocolate chips. Squeeze two drops from a Vitamin E capsule or add 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil for a soothing lip gloss for dry, chapped lips.

Step 3

Add 1 tsp. of glycerin or natural honey, which will act as a moisture-retaining humectant, according to Idea Queen. Whip the mixture until the ingredients are blended. Test the lip gloss and add extra flavoring, if desired. Add more beeswax if the lip gloss is too soft.

Step 4

Place the lip gloss in a small, sterile container. Use a clean film canister or other small container or purchase a glass pot or tube at a craft shop.
