Flaky skin goes hand in hand with dryness. Dry skin tends to flake off as the skin cells die and start to shed. This is more often a problem in the winter months, as the air becomes cooler and drier, leading to skin and hair problems. Skincare products also contribute to flaking as some dry the skin and promote irritation. Seasonal skin care regimens are an ideal way to prevent and treat this condition without harming the skin.

Step 1

Apply a cream-based moisturizer daily to lock in the skin's much needed moisture. Moisturizers come in varieties for every skin type. According to the Doctors Book of Home Remedies, moisturizers should not contain perfumes or dyes if you suffer from sensitive skin, while oily skin types should avoid oil-based moisturizers.

Step 2

Apply a few drops of bath oil to bathwater for a relaxing treatment. The Doctors Book of Home Remedies suggest using standard castor oil in your bathing routine. Mix 1/2 cup of castor oil with 4 tbsp. of your preferred essential oil such as sandalwood, lavendar or mint. Add 1 tsp. to your bathwater.

Step 3

Cleanse your skin with cooler water. Hot water dries the skin and leaves you without the natural moisturizing effect of your own skin oils. Using exfoliating skin scrubs when you do bathe will loosen flaking skin and give you a deep down cleaning that helps eliminate dry skin. Do not scrub the skin excessively as this could lead to skin irritation, according to CareFair.com.

Step 4

Drink eight to 10 glasses of water per day to keep hydrated. Drinking water for hydration adds moisture to the skin from the inside out.

Step 5

Wear loose fitting clothes to prevent perspiration from building up on the skin. When perspiration dries, it takes the skin's natural moisture with it, according to the Doctors Book of Home Remedies. Along with loose clothing, opt for breathable fabrics such as cotton and wool.

Things You'll Need

  • Cream moisturizer
  • Castor oil
