Minocycline is an antibiotic developed from tetracycline and dispensed in oral capsules. Tetracycline antibiotics prevent the protein synthesis of bacteria, making them useful for the treatment of acne. Acne occurs when dead skin cells, dirt and excess oil form a plug that settles into a hair follicle. The follicle continues to produce oil for the skin, and bacteria form in the oil pool. By taking minocycline capsules, you prevent bacteria from thriving and reproducing.
Step 1
Take two 100 mg capsules or four 50 mg capsules for the first dose with a full glass of water. This is a typical first dosage for an adult, but if your doctor's instructions call for a different dose, follow the instructions.
Step 2
Wait 12 hours, then take 100 mg of minocycline.
Step 3
Maintain a 12-hour schedule for taking the antibiotic. Administer a dose as soon as possible if you realize you've missed one. Misses doses may reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic or allow a resistant strain of bacteria to develop. Take the full therapy prescribed by your doctor--if the doctor gives you a 14-day prescription, take the medication for 14 days.
