With the high cost of most golf equipment, a set of golf clubs represents a major investment for many buyers. Protect your investment with a sturdy, durable golf bag designed to store all your clubs and related equipment. It may be tempting to choose the latest bag or the one with the most advanced features, but it's more important to find a bag that allows you to carry and keep track of your clubs with ease. As you shop for golf bags, consider factors like size, carry straps, design and materials to find the best model for your needs.

Step 1

Visit a specialty golf shop or sporting goods store that carries a large selection of golf bags. Pick different bags to compare comfort and ease of use. Look for bags with wide, padded straps that make it easy for you to pick up the bag and transfer it to your shoulder. The bag should feel comfortable on your back, whether you're using one or both straps. Narrow your search to only the most comfortable bags and avoid any with narrow straps that cause discomfort to your shoulders or back.

Step 2

Review the manufacturer's specifications for each bag to compare weight. According to Golf Digest, some bags weigh as little as 4 lbs. While a pound or two may not seem like much, it can make a big difference once the bag is loaded down with your clubs and other gear. Pick the lightest bag you can find that can comfortably hold your gear.

Step 3

Open each bag to check the interior design. The bag should have enough individual pockets to hold all of your clubs. Each club should be easy to access, either due to a convenient layout or a lazy-susan design that makes it easy to locate your clubs. If you use expensive clubs, look for locking mechanisms that prevent the clubs from rattling around within the bag. Some golfers may prefer an exterior pocket to keep the putter readily accessible.

Step 4

Inspect the exterior design of each bag. Make sure the bag has enough pockets to hold all your gear, from balls to tees, and that the pockets are the right size to meet your needs. Look for special features like magnetic ball pockets, insulated cooler pockets or water-resistant compartments to hold wet clothes or rain gear.

Step 5

Ask the sales staff about different material options. According to Golf Magic, the best golf bags feature a sturdy, waterproof exterior. Inexpensive bags feature nylon casing, while more expensive units use leather or PVC. The inside pockets of the bag should consist of PVC, leather or fur to protect your clubs from damage.

Step 6

Test the metal stand that comes with each bag to check for stability. Stands with large foot pads are less likely to sink into mud or loose soil. Make sure the stand holds the bag in the desired position and is easy to set up and take down.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wheeled bags or those with detachable carts may seem convenient but are not allowed on all courses. Wheels and frames can also add to the weight of your bag and reduce portability.
