Exercises that strengthen the face tone the muscles to give a tighter appearance. The face and scalp have 10 groups of muscles, and unlike skeletal muscles, they are attached to bone, skin and other muscles. When facial muscles lose tone, it causes the skin to droop, making the face appear older. Keeping the muscles toned will give the face a natural face-lift. You can perform facial exercises daily for the best benefits.

Smile and Whistle

The smile and whistle exercise engages the muscles in the cheeks and around the mouth. This facial yoga exercise is effective for toning the facial muscles and improving breathing. Begin standing or sitting in proper alignment, shoulders over your hips and away from your ears. Keep your eyes open and relax your face. Part your lips slightly, and inhale deeply as you open your mouth into a wide smile. Exhale and pull the lips together in a pucker, blowing the air out forcefully through your lips. Repeat this movement 10 to 12 times.

Pout and Lift

The pout and lift engages the muscles of the mouth, jaw and neck. Begin this exercise sitting or standing in correct posture, shoulders over your hips and away from your ears. Bring your bottom lip up over your top lip, like you are pouting, and hold. Inhale and lift your chin up toward the ceiling, until you feel the neck stretch. Exhale and release the chin back to horizontal, lifting your neck tall as you release. Repeat this movement 10 to 12 times.

Surprise Me

The surprise me exercise is a facial yoga exercise that engages the muscles around the eyes. Begin this exercise standing or sitting in proper alignment and relax your shoulders away from your ears. Inhale and relax your face, exhale and relax your shoulders. Open your eyes as wide as you can without wrinkling your forehead, focus directly in front of you and hold for eight to 10 counts, then release. Repeat this exercise 10 to 12 times.

The Belly Laugh

The belly laugh is a laughing yoga exercise that engages the facial muscles, the core and improves breathing. Begin this exercise standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, shoulders over hips and away from your ears. Exhale and open your mouth as wide as you can, while you laugh for five counts. Close your mouth and inhale. Repeat this exercise 10 to 12 times.
