Remedies for a Chest Cold

Supposed cures for the common cold abound, but most helpful approaches to the cold virus have to do with symptomatic relief rather than actual "cures." Some tried-and-true methods have proven efficacy.

Step 1

Eat chicken soup. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic agree that chicken soup helps cold and flu symptoms as an anti-inflammatory (inhibits movement of neutrophils, which are immune system cells that help in response to inflammation) and as a vehicle to speed mucous movement. Both homemade and canned chicken soup seemed to work about the same in tests.

Step 2

Ingest lots of fluids. Although you can't flush your cold away, lots of water, juice, clear broth or honey and lemon water help hydrate your system. Stay clear of alcohol and caffeinated drinks, which tend to dehydrate your system.

Step 3

Gargle with salt water. Use about 1/2 tsp. salt in a glass of warm water. It may have no taste, but it will relieve a dry and scratchy throat.

Step 4

Spray your nose with saline sprays. They can help with congestion and won't leave you with heightened symptoms after you stop using them, as chemical nasal decongestants can.

Step 5

Humidify the air. Cold viruses like dry conditions--a reason they seem to proliferate in winter. A little eucalyptus oil mixed with distilled water in your humidifier will make the process more pleasant. Make sure the humidifier is disinfected and filters cleaned/changed so you don't reinfect.

Things You'll Need

  • Humidifier
  • Chicken soup
  • Juices
  • Eucalyptus oil
